For a while in New York City, just south of 46th Street, between 7th Avenue
and Broadway, under the metal grate of a triangular traffic island, in the
middle of Times Square, constant traffic, pedestrians and general city
din, a continuously sounding rich organ-like harmony eminated out from
under the ground. Max Neuhaus obtained permission from the City to
set-up here one of the most famous environmental/public sound
installations. This chord was sustained forever, unnoticed amidst all the
noise of New York until one was directly on top of it. An electrical sound
generator lay unseen under the steel grate that covered this cavernous well.
